Hard to get a good read on what went down in Reggie's decision to give back the Heisman. For all we know he could be tired of the situation and wanting to put an end to the mess by conceding the Heisman against his will or he could be doing this behind the scenes with USC in mind in following the apologetic stance that Pat Haden has taken in the NCAA case. Regardless of why it went down, I think it's pathetic that Reggie was ever put in this situation.
I think I'm stating the obvious here, but none of Reggie's mistakes made him a better player on the field; he earned the trophy by being the most electrifying player in college football. His back-to-back 294 yard and 260 yard games against Fresno St. and UCLA, respectively, to close out the 2005 season left no doubt about who deserved the Heisman that year. Funny how this blind hatred causes so many to revise history.
